Alumnae Admissions/Prospective Students

Smith College Needs YOU - The Alumnae -- to Help With Admissions

In spite of a wonderful national reputation, applications and enrollment to Smith have experienced a disappointing trend, which has been addressed by the College with the creation of an Admission Strategic Plan. Several factors - Smith's location outside of a major city, a growing interest in schools with more than 5,000 students and an audience that is increasingly questioning the relevance of single-sex education -- threaten to diminish Smith's standing as a competitive institution. For the first time in many years, Smith went to its wait list this year because so many first-choice students chose other colleges or universities.

GET INVOLVED WITH ADMISSIONS: Contact our Director:
Audrey Paek at audpaek @ yahoo.com

Alumnae Admissions activities:

  • Attend college fairs at local high schools and introduce Smith to seniors and their families.
  • Contact high school guidance counselors and encourage them to introduce Smith College to their best high school seniors
  • Contact students who have asked the College for informative materials and speak about Smith in an open, engaging way.
  • Encourage qualified seniors and transfer students to apply to Smith and, in spring, encourage the accepted students to enroll.
  • Conduct alumnae interviews. Though no longer required by the College, alumnae interviews provide depth in a student's application and can be very influential in close decisions.
  • Assist with Smith Book Awards program and attend high school spring assemblies to make the presentation on behalf of the BSCC to promising junior students
  • Attend a sendoff event for new and returning Smith students in late summer.

Prospective Student Book Awards

The BSCC presents Smith book awards to promising high school juniors (top 10% of the class). The student receives:

  • A book with certificate and book plate
  • The application fee to Smith is waived

Awards are presented in the spring. Please contact Julie Jones or Peg Merzbacher for more information about helping to contact schools, presenting awards, funding awards, or getting your local high school involved.

  • We'd like to increase the number of book awards we present to a minimum of 30.
  • In Spring 2003, we presented x book awards.
  • In Spring 2002, we presented 26 book awards. The increase is partially due to inclusion of the South Shore.
  • In Spring 2001, we presented 10 book awards.
  • Suggested donation to fund a book award is $25.00.
